The current food waste management system makes use of posters and infographics to create a sense of awareness among the users about food wastage. Most of the time these infographics gets unnoticed. Below are some of the infographics that were used in the canteen of SAP Labs Bengaluru, India.
A people survey was also conducted in which the opinion of people was asked about food wastage if they see the real time statistics of food waste. The survey was conducted upon 20 people.
Below is the statistical data based on 20 opinions (from the people opinion survey carried out by the author of this paper) regarding the generation of awareness among people after seeing real time analytics of food wastage.
There are certain problems that have been encountered in the canteens serving food. Some of them are: xNon-availability of proper analytics (analytics on what the customer wants) in cafe/canteen/kitchens that leads to wastage of food. xNo information regarding the wastage of food is given to the customer. xThe minimization of food waste is not there (proper waste management can ultimately lead to high revenue generation by the company). The primary goal of the project is to raise awareness of food waste in canteens and make people more conscious of their choices. People should feel as though they are making some sort of difference.
Various techniques have been applied till date to combat food waste. From textual messages in canteens/cafe such as “STOP FOOD WASTAGE”, “Love food” etc. to pictorial representations showing the consequences of food wastage, companies are doing their part in imparting the knowledge of wastage of food in their customer’s mind. Some people are also working individually to help save more food. One of those person is Secret Freegan. Secret Freegan is a Phoenix resident who recovers food from grocery store dumpsters and donates it to those in need.

Inspired by the 2/28/08 episode of Oprah, Secret Freegan has been recovering food for needy families and various shelters since March of 2008. In that time, she estimates she has donated $45,000 worth of food to the hungry [2]. Korean government has also started an initiative to combat food wastage. The government has established a new pay-as-you-throw food waste management system. On Oct. 15 2012, the Jeju provincial government announced that starting Jan. 1, the disposing of food waste will cost citizens 22 won per kg, and 76 won per kg for restaurants and other large-scale establishments. The new system will see Radio Frequency Identification Reader (RFID) bins installed at most garbage houses by next year. Designed by SK Telecom, Korea’s largest wireless carrier, the RFID bins calculate the weight of food waste to the nearest gram and automatically processes the payment and charges it to the citizen’s individual RFID card [3]. Weigh the Waste Raises Awareness of Food Waste on Campus by Knox college is also doing the same thing of raising awareness among people by creating a visual representation of the food waste Knox College students produce over one week[4]
Our approach is to provide real-time analytics screens in canteens/cafe so that it can generate a responsibility factor and a sense of awareness in consumer about wasting food so that they can waste less food. For this we are using IoT Analytics. IoT analytics is the application of data analysis tools and procedures to realize value from the huge volumes of data generated by connected Internet of Things devices [5]. Our objective is to collect the data that was not getting used until now and then perform analytics over that data. In our project, from analytics we can know xhow much data is getting wasted per day xwhich is the day of the week in which more food is getting wasted (Smart Insights) xhow much food should the kitchen manager order This approach has been chosen because statistics have always proven to be better at conveying the message clearly and appropriately to the audience. When we see that we are contributing to the waste of food as a real time stat, this creates a sense of responsibility in us that ultimately will lead us to take less food when we eat.  Code Shoppy
